Models - Essence-Driven Product Development
A product is only as clear as the thinking behind it.
framing -
Products rarely lose direction at a single point. They lose it gradually: in documents, in meetings, in assumptions no one questions anymore.
Essence-Driven Product Development starts where that blur begins: in the knowledge a product is built on.
observations -
- A vague strategy allows any reading.
- An overloaded requirement hides what it is actually about.
- A guess, repeated often enough, starts to sound like fact.
- Decisions lose their reason faster than their effect.
principles -
- Essential. Every statement is reduced to its core. What carries no meaning goes.
- Honest. What is not proven stays visible as an assumption until it is.
- Connected. Every decision knows its reason and what it rests on.
example -
A team assumes that users drop off after sixty seconds. Three decisions rest on it: one-screen onboarding, no email confirmation, sign-up in under a minute.
Then the assumption turns out to be wrong. Exactly those three decisions are revisited. Pricing, brand voice and everything else stay untouched.
how it works -
Everything known about a product lives in one place: a ledger of short entries. Each entry is an assumption, a decision, a constraint or an open question, and names what it rests on.
Documents, decks and specs are drawn from the ledger when needed and never replace it. When an entry changes, the ledger shows which others depend on it.
effect -
- A team reads the same thing.
- Decisions stay understandable years later.
- A change of course shows at once what it touches.
- The product stays close to what actually matters.
